Results From The Disavow Tool

My most recent post related to the implementation and implications of the Google Disavow Tool.  I wanted to experiment with the tool and see just how effective it is at bringing back sites with ‘less than healthily’ link profiles.

The site for this case study is one that was functioning extremely well up until the Penguin update.  It generated about 500 UV’s from Google each day and was a nice little earner from subscriptions and advertising.  After Penguin it was essentially abandoned when it crashed back to about 30 visitors per day.

On the 22nd of November I submitted a disavow file with EVERY link that I could locate for the domain.  I took dumps from Webmaster ToolsMajestic SEO and OSE and used the domain: prefix on all the gathered links.

Within 6 weeks the traffic has increased from 20 organic search UVs to 100 (400% growth), which in my mind is a pretty significant win.

The domain currently has a manual Google penalty against it, for which I have filed a reconsideration request and expect the penalty to be lifted in the next week or two.  Hopefully the traffic will increase or supersede its pre-April 2012 levels.
